VYŠEHRAD around the year 1420

Reconstruction of the castle of how it might have looked like around the year 1420.
(Made on the basis of research and old illustrations)

A view of Vyšehrad before its conquering and battering down. From the New Town of Prague, the Jerusalem Gate (left) safeguarded by a moat and a cradle drawbridge led to the fortress. In the background, nine turrets of the »Špička« Gate are rising up to the sky (the third gate, Podolská, is situated on the reverse side). Inside the fortification ring with 15 rectangular towers, mainly church buildings were located. A dominant feature is the Basilica and Royal Collegiate Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, a rebuilt Romanesque basilica. At that time, a belfry was preserved from it (the prismatic tower to the left of the main nave). Between the mentioned gates, you can see the Rotunda of St. Martin (preserved up to the present day) and on the right, a tip of the roof of the St. Lawrence Church. Between the two towers on the left we can see a steep roof of the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. The nascent town consists of several houses of residents mostly employed at the Chapter or in the defence of the fort. The Castle is dominated by the Neklanka Tower and close to it, a separately fortified royal ward with palaces and administrative buildings (in the right part) can be seen. On the left, there is a settlement around the castle with the Church of Virgin Mary of Humility and a toll station. The slopes are planted with grapevine.
